Jubilee to insure all 18,000 runners at Standard Chartered marathon

By Eric Akasa

East Africa’s largest insurance company, Jubilee Insurance is, for the sixth year running, the official insurer of this year’s Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. The company has confirmed it will insure all the 18,000 marathon runners, from over 20 countries, participating in the event.

Jubilee is giving Sh80 million worth of sponsorship, that will go towards Group Personal Accident Covers for the runners, volunteers and officials, of all ages. In addition, the company will also cover all equipment in use during the marathon.

“Jubilee is proud to once again be part of this event whose proceeds go towards supporting a very important societal need, that of medical care for needy children,” said Jubilee Insurance Kenya CEO Patrick Tumbo. “As an insurance company committed to the welfare of the communities in markets we operate in, and as the leading medical insurer in East Africa, this sponsorship is key to Jubilee.”

Mr Tumbo said Jubilee’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investment is a long term commitment, with most of its support going towards medical care and education of less privileged children. The Jubilee Group has operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Mauritius.  The Standard Chartered Nairobi marathon has over the years grown in stature, subsequently increasing support of cataract, glaucoma and other trauma related surgeries for underprivileged children in various parts of the country.

Jubilee will also have a corporate team of staff members participating in the 21km run and a stand showcasing its range of pioneering products in Pensions, Life, General and Medical insurance.

The Group Personal Accident cover will offer full protection to all the individuals attending the marathon, for any eventualities. The sponsorship also includes an all-risks cover worth Sh7.5 million for general equipment, which insures all the equipment used during the marathon, from branding and signage materials to race administration equipment, including paraphernalia provided by other event sponsors. A public liability cover worth KShs12 million is also provided, indemnifying Standard Chartered against loss or damage incurred in the course of the event.

“This insurance cover gives the organizers and participants to the marathon, peace of mind that they have protection against all risks around this important athletic and charity event,” said Mr Tumbo.
