Jubilee Insurance Thursday made a payment of KShs 30 million to families of departed Members of Parliament (MPs) including those involved in a recent helicopter crash.

The Life insurance benefits payment was presented by Jubilee Insurance Kenya Chief Executive Officer Patrick Tumbo to the Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Kenneth Marende, on behalf of families of the late cabinet ministers John Michuki, Prof. George Saitoti and Orwa Ojode. Jubilee provides the Group Life Insurance cover to The National Assembly.

“Jubilee stands with all Kenyans and families of the deceased leaders, in mourning the loss our leaders. We are happy that in some way we are making the pain of the survivors a little easier to bear by making this speedy claim settlement today,” points out Mr Tumbo.

Hon Marende noted that the 10th parliament was the most progressive since Kenya’s independence, in terms of taking care of the welfare of its members and delivering relevant policies. The Speaker thanked Jubilee for the prompt payment, saying that this was a practice evident of a reputable insurer.

“We note the prompt payment done by Jubilee, which clearly illustrates that the insurer is solid and honors its insurance claims without hesitation,” remarks Hon Marende. “I confirm that the payments have been electronically transferred to the families of the diseased, and thank Jubilee for its high quality service standards.” He adds.

While urging the general public to embrace insurance, Hon Marende underscored the importance of spreading risks and cushioning themselves from unforeseeable misfortunes.

The Clerk of the National Assembly Patrick Gichohi said Jubilee was awarded the National Assembly’s Group Life insurance contract in 2011 through an open tender system in line with the Procurement Act.

Mr Tumbo said that Jubilee was making efforts aimed at increasing insurance penetration in Kenya, currently at a negligible less that 3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and urged parliament to support the industry through relevant laws.
